Moccasin 2 Double Canoe — Father & Son Build

Custom Boatbuilding in Brewster, WA

This is one of our early builds—launched in 2017 but still going strong. The project started in Colorado during a visit to see my father, using B&B Yacht Designs’ Moccasin 2 (Double) Canoe plans. This was hull #194.

We finally launched it at Barr Reservoir. Even with strong winds the boat tracked beautifully, due to the keel underneath it!

Materials & Process

We used:

  • 4mm Okoume marine plywood
  • Tight-grained fir board, 16' x 6" x ¾", for all framing and structure
  • Glass tape and epoxy
  • Hand tools: Japanese pull saw, circular saw, block plane

The build was simple to loft and cut. The bow panels were stacked and cut as a pair for accuracy. All four sides were matched before proceeding. We did learn one lesson early—should have started glassing from the outside first. Required two full flips to recover that error.

We cracked a forward hull panel while wiring up the bow stem. That panel is now laminated on both sides with glass tape and epoxy. Solid fix.

To flip the hull safely, we ran temporary cross-struts, clamped in place, then attached a long board along the top to act as a lifting spine. Each strut was anchored with a single screw.

Why This Design?

Lightweight. Stable. Tracks well. Keel underneath to make windy conditions easy to keep a straight track. Perfect for lakes, light rivers, and easy car-topping. No fancy jigs or lofting table required. We built it in a garage over a few weeks, part-time.

Great father-son project. Even better to paddle.
